It is said that Congregation Emanuel in Denver, Colorado was founded at the bris or circumcision ceremony of Milton Anfenger, the eldest son of Louis and Louise Anfenger. Milton Anfenger became a successful attorney and leader in Denver. He was a lifetime board member of National Jewish Hospital and wrote a book about its early history. Louis Anfenger of Denver, Colorado. Born in Bavaria, Anfenger came to the United States in the 1850s, moving west in 1870 to seek his fortune. He started as a clerk and became a highly successful businessman in the area of real estate, as well as a member of the Denver Chamber of Commerce, and was later elected to the state legislature in the 1880s.
