George Nathan and Fanny Herzel, 1929-1990

Abstract

Originally from Latvia, George Herzel was a Hebrew teacher and scholar in Denver from 1928 until 1946. George wrote several unpublished manuscripts on Jewish topics, two Jewish guidebooks, essays, and an autobiography. Both George and his wife Fanny (born in Poland, married in 1910) were certified notary publics.

Dr. Lewis Hill Chernoff was an accomplished violinist who played with the Denver Symphony and Carvallo's Symphony. He was also a chemist and worked for the Food and Drug Administration in Denver. Collection contains miscellaneous papers, diplomas and certificates largely relating to Lewis Chernoff and some to Sophie Chernoff.

Abstract Ernst Heinrich Loewenstein [Henry Lowenstein] was born in Berlin, Germany in 1925 to a Jewish father and a non-Jewish mother. To escape Nazi brutality, he was sent on the Kindertransport to England in 1939. His parents, Dr. Max and Maria Loewenstein, and his half-sister, Karin Steinberg, remained in Berlin during World War II.
