Abstract

Both the Paper and the Himelgrin families are of Polish and Jewish decent. The families knew each other in Poland and both immigrated to the United States. The families were united with the marriage of Evelyn Paper and Gerald Himelgrin in 1947. This collection portrays Jewish community life in Denver. This collection includes scrapbooks, photographs, artist sketch books, correspondence, transcripts, marriage certificate and documents relating to the Evelyn Paper Himelgrin and Gerald Himelgrin. Biographical / Historical

Evelyn Paper was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 28, 1928 to Jewish Polish immigrants Solomon Paper and Rose Greenberg Paper. The Paper’s had 3 children- Herbert, Evelyn and Esther. They moved to Denver and opened a bakery in 1936, Paper's Pastry Place, at 3936 West Colfax Avenue, living on the second floor of the building over the bakery. The bakery closed in 1966. Gerald Himelgrin was born in Denver on September 9, 1924 to Jewish Polish immigrants Abraham and Hetty Himelgrin. Abraham worked as a tailor. The family had two sons, Gerald and Jack. Evelyn Paper married Gerald Himelgrin on August 27, 1947. The Paper and Himelgrin families had known each other in Poland. Gerald served in the Army during WWII and received a law degree from the University of Denver in 1954. Evelyn earned degrees from both University of Chicago and the University of Boulder. Gerald worked as a lawyer and Evelyn, an artist, worked as an interior designer. The family had two daughters- Randi and Marea. Gerald died in 1989 and Evelyn in 2009.
