Abstract

Dr. Allen Breck discusses the University Park neighborhood of Denver, Colorado. Breck notes that although a number of professionals still live in the area, there are not as many University of Denver faculty members with homes in the neighborhood as there were in past years. He speculates that this may be due to the fact that University Park houses are more expensive. He discusses schools in the area, and the positive effect that living in the neighborhood has had on his life. He also discusses zoning issues and how the community and the University of Denver fought changes that they perceived would have a negative effect on the area. He concludes with a brief history of the origin of the neighborhood, as the Union Colony started by John Evans in 1886.

The series consists of 50 oral histories collected by Barry Matchett during 1986. The interviewees were all persons who lived in the University Park neighborhood, and concerned their memories of growing up and living in the neighborhood over a number of years.

Title supplied by cataloger ||Narration recorded at 2060 South St. Paul Street, Denver, Colorado in 1986. ||Participant: Dr. Allen Breck. ||Dr. Allen duPont Breck (1914-2000) was born in Denver, Colorado. He received a B.A. from the University of Denver and a Ph.D. in medieval history from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. Breck was a professor of history at the University of Denver, where he served as the chairman of the History Department for 20 years. He also taught classes in Anglican studies at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver and wrote, edited, or contributed to histories of various religious groups in Colorado. He wrote books on topics including medieval philosophy and the history of the University of Denver. Breck was a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and was also a member of the Medieval Academy of America, the Western Social Science Association, and the Western History Association. Breck lived in the University Park area of Denver. ||Audio file begins in mid-sentence.
