Biography
Samuel J. Kline was born at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on July 19, 1859. His early years were spent in Denver, but in the 1870s, the family moved to Chicago. There, he held a series of jobs, but he was primarily a "credit man"; he also was a partner in a cloak manufacturing company, and was active in the hotel business. In 1916, he was president of Siegel, Cooper and Company, a large Chicago department store. Kline married his wife, Judith Felsenthal, on December 17, 1884, and the two eventually lived in Los Angeles. He wrote a book, "Recollections and Comments" (Los Angeles, 1924) which, among other topics, covers his childhood in the West, primarily in Denver. He died sometime after 1940. Kline journeyed to Denver with his family in 1862 behind a mule team. In his memoir he recalls the Cherry Creek flood of 1864, Lincoln's assassination, and living on the outskirts of Denver.
