Ben Eastman for Colorado Reflections
Ben Eastman reflects on his life on the Western Slope and his time spent as an apple grower in Hotchkiss, Colorado. Discusses the history of the Western Slope, the mining and agriculture industries, and the history of Native Americans in the area, Utes in particular. Eastman discusses specifics of apple growing, including varieties of apples, land management, planting, harvesting, and hybridization.
Buildings and Campus, 1910-1955
Contains photographs of buildings and the campus of the JCRS, including the cooperative store, the farm, poultry farm, a cow and the dedication of the New York Building. There are also three 8x10 inch negatives of the campus.
Cedric Page for Colorado Reflections
Cedric "Rick" Page, professor of geography and urban studies at the University of Colorado, reflects on his research on the development of Dearfield, Colorado. Dearfield is considered a "Black town" because of the migration of African Americans out of the south and into the West. Page discusses the history of black communities settling Colorado and their efforts to establish towns and agricultural communities in the early 1900s.
