Originally from Poland, he immigrated to the United States on November 5, 1905. Joseph Messing worked in New York City as a cutter, contracted tuberculosis there, and was a patient at the JCRS from December 24, 1923 to February 19, 1924, and from March 30 to June 24, 1925. Paul Kwartin was a Brooklyn cantor who was born in Hungary and raised in Denver. He sang with the Central City Opera in Denver for eight seasons, appeared in a Broadway production of "No For An Answer", and was also a business manager. He died in his Westport, Connecticut home from cancer at age 63.
