Biographical / Historical
Donald Stedman was born February 8, 1943 in Dundee, Scotland, to Ralph Stedman and Helena Underhill Stedman. He studied Chemistry at Cambridge University and this is where he met his wife, Hazel Cooke. They went on to have three sons, Kenneth, Roy, and Ian. Donald Stedman continued his educaqtion at the Univeristy of East Anglia, earning masters and doctoral degrees. He persued post-doctoral work in atmospheric checmistry at Kansas State University. He then worked for Ford Motor Company in the research laboratories before going to the University of Michigan where he worked as a professor. In 1983, he was awarded the Brainerd Phillipson chair of the environmental science at the University of Denver, where he worked until he retired in 2008. While working at the University of Denver, they honored him as University Lecturer and as John Evans Professor, their highest award. Donald Stedman received many awards and commendations for his work including the Haagen-Smit lifetime achievement award in atmospheric chemistry, which was presented posthumously. Donald Stedman died of lung cancer, despite never smoking, on April 16, 2016 in Portland, Oregon. Scope and Contents
The Donald Stedman Papers conatin personal papers, correspondence, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and photographs. There is also information on his Fuel Efficiency Automobile Testing (FEAT) program and his Clean Air initiative. There are two (2) scrapbooks filled with clippings, photographs, and University of Denver publications related to Professor Stedman.
