Oral History interview with Drs. Robert and Alberta Shattuck, 1986
Abstract
Dr. Robert Shattuck and his wife, Dr. Alberta Shattuck share their memories of growing up in the University Park area of Denver, Colorado, providing details about the neighborhood. Robert Shattuck discusses transportation, including the tramway line and the C and S Railroad, working at the Diamond Joe Ranch as a field hand, and his classes and teachers at the University Park Elementary School. He shares an anecdote about his uncle, Herbert A. Howe, Professor of Astronomy at the University of Denver, and discusses the role that John Evans, Colorado's second Territorial Governor, played in the development of the University of Denver, known at the time as the Colorado Seminary. Robert Shattuck also relates details about his experiences as a member of Boy Scout Troop 5, Denver, Colorado, including the names of campsites the group used and trails where the troop hiked in the mountains of Colorado. Alberta Shattuck provides a history of the Iliff School of Theology, located in Denver adjacent to the University of Denver campus, which her grandmother established in memory of her first husband and Alberta's grandfather, John Wesley Iliff.

The series consists of 50 oral histories collected by Barry Matchett during 1986. The interviewees were all persons who lived in the University Park neighborhood, and concerned their memories of growing up and living in the neighborhood over a number of years.

Title supplied by cataloger. ||Interview conducted at 6484 South Sycamore, Littleton, Colorado on April 30, 1986. ||Participants: Robert Matchett ; Dr. Robert Shattuck ; Dr. Alberta Shattuck. ||Dr. Robert C. Shattuck (1904-1996), a physician and surgeon, was born in the University Park area of Denver, Colorado, and lived in the neighborhood until 1934. He was a member of Boy Scout Troop 5, Denver, Colo. Shattuck attended University Park Elementary School and South High School, and graduated from the University of Denver. He attended medical school in Colorado and Pennsylvania, and opened a medical practice in Colorado. Shattuck's grandfather, Joseph Shattuck, was the first dean of the University of Denver. Shattuck's uncle, Herbert Alonzo Howe, was a professor of astronomy and a dean at the University of Denver who was instrumental in having the Chamberlin Observatory built. Shattuck was an honorary trustee at the University of Denver, and he wrote a book about University Park that was published by the University Park Methodist Church. He married Dr. Alberta Iliff in 1959. ||Dr. Alberta Iliff Shattuck (1909-2011) was born in Denver, Colorado, the third child of William Seward Iliff and Alberta Gearhart Bloom Iliff, and lived in the University Park neighborhood until 1959. She attended the University Park Elementary School and graduated from the University of Denver in 1931 with an undergraduate degree in chemistry, and an M.S. in 1932. She received a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in 1942, and married Dr. Robert C. Shattuck in 1959. ||Names appear on cassette label as: Dr. Robert Shattuck and wife Mrs. Iliff-Shattuck [sic]
