Abstract

Chuck and Dorothy Haines discuss details about the University Park area of Denver, Colorado and the changes that have taken place since they moved to the neighborhood. They talk about the local schools, passenger and freight train service in the area, and local businesses including the pharmacy and the Piggly Wiggly grocery store. They discuss the relationship between the neighborhood and the University of Denver, highlighting the friction between the two groups in the past. Chuck Haines also relates some historical details about Boy Scout Troop 5, Denver, Colorado.

The series consists of 50 oral histories collected by Barry Matchett during 1986. The interviewees were all persons who lived in the University Park neighborhood, and concerned their memories of growing up and living in the neighborhood over a number of years.

Title supplied by cataloger. ||Interview conducted at 2300 S. Milwaukee Street, Denver, Colorado in 1986. ||Participants: Curtis Klinghammer ; Chuck Haines ; Dorothy Haines. ||Charles H. (Chuck) Haines (1914-1988) moved to the University Park area of Denver, Colorado with his parents when he was four years old, taking up residence in the former home of Herbert Alonzo Howe, a professor of astronomy and a dean at the University of Denver. Dorothy F. Haines moved to the neighborhood after marrying Charles Haines. Both of their mothers attended the University of Denver, where they were sorority sisters. Charles Haines was a member of Boy Scout Troop 5, Denver, Colorado, from 1925 to 1932 or 1933. Their children and grandchildren attended school in the neighborhood.
