Herbert A. Howe 1926 Diary, 1926
Abstract
Professor Howe's diary for 1926 recounts his brief weather and astronomical observations, administrative and teaching activities at the University of Denver, entertainment of visitors to the Chamberlin Observatory, participation in events in University Park and elsewhere in Denver, his family and religious life. Howe retired in May as the longest tenured professor at the University. Howe's handwriting in the entries for June 26 and 27 deteriorates markedly, and he notes he was sick in bed with dizziness all day on the 27th. He notes improvement over the next few days. On July 9, his sons Hubert and Ernest were departing for the East, and the cab sent for them got stuck in the mud from an afternoon cloudburst. East Evans Avenue was reported to have run full, curb to curb. On September 3 and 4 Howe again notes illness, and pain and dizzyness on September 18. The final entry is for Wednesday, October 20--a full day of work at his desk at home. Apparently Howe suffered his most serious stroke to date on or about the 21st. He died 13 days later, on November 2.
