Herbert A. Howe 1902 Diary, 1902
Abstract
Professor Howe's diary for 1902 recounts his brief weather and astronomical observations, administrative and teaching activities at the University of Denver, entertainment of visitors to the Chamberlin Observatory, participation in events in University Park and elsewhere in Denver, his family and religious life. Particular mention is made of: his son Hubert's purchase (for 50 cents) a half-grown coyote for a pet; observations of Perrine's Comet beginning September 4th; the unexpected appearance of a new college paper, The Critic, characterized by Howe as ''devoted to athletics ostensibly ...''; his mother-in-law's trip to Ft. Worth in an unsuccessful attempt to improve her health; and November 7th speeches in chapel in favor of organizing a literary society. The Howe children were impressed at Christmas -- they received about 17 presents apiece.
