Abstract

Nelson Schachet (1903-1992), born and raised in Denver, recounts his family history including ties to Cincinnati and the family's origins in Lithuania, and his life in the West Colfax neighborhood of Denver during the 1920s and 1930s. He talks about his father's business, Schachet Mercantile Co. located on Morrison Road, and other Jewish-owned businesses in the neighborhood. His father brought Manischewitz matzah to Denver. Bugsy Siegel ate at the delicatessen that was part of the Mercantile Co. whenever he was in Denver. Nelson Schachet also discusses various synagogues and kosher food producers active on West Colfax Avenue. Nelson Schachet was born in Denver on January 20, 1903 and died June 10, 1992. His wife was Gertrude Schachet (1900-1962).

Series 1 consists of the recorded oral histories of individuals and, occasionally, groups of individuals representing Jewish organizations. Many of the interviewees are descendants of early Colorado Jewish pioneers or were Jewish newcomers to the state in the beginning of the 20th century. The interviews document Jewish history in Colorado in the 20th century.
