Buttercream Colored Taffeta Skirt, circa 1885
Abstract
A two-piece taffeta skirt and bodice. Skirt consisting of a buttercream colored taffeta overskirt with underskirt. The jacquard print has vertical stripes of left and right facing flowers with stems that run the length of the fabric. The lower edge of the overskirt has tabs that come to points. The tabs are trimmed with buttercream colored piping and lined with taffeta that matches the skirt. The purpose of the tabs is to add weight to the points and made them less likely to flip or flutter. The petticoat, or underskirt, is very fine off-white cotton and has an elaborate ruffle attached to the bottom. Originally belonged to Frances Wisebart Jacobs.
