Box 15: Fabric Protest Sign, 2020-2024

 File — Box: U219.04.0015
Identifier: U219.04.0015

Abstract

This box contains a fabric protest poster that was used during the DU Students for Palestine Encampment. The poster is a green fabric with purple, blue, orange, and yellow stripes that has white printing stating "Atlanta Can't Breathe" along with images of a gun, a security camera, and deforestation. This is probably relating to the death of Johnny Hollman in Atlanta in 2023, when a police officer pulled Hlolman over for a traffic violation, arrested him, and tased him as Hollman yelled "I can't breathe." Because of this event, Hollman died 2 hours later, and "I can't breathe" became a rallying cry during protests of police brutality.
