Abstract

Documents and correspondence pertaining to the DU Museum of Anthropology's notification of remains and objects in their collections that were identified with the Hopi Tribe. Folder 1/3 contains materials from 1995-2002, including: initial correspondence and inventories; preparation materials for consultation visit with tribal representatives; correspondence pertaining to DUMA's processes for determining cultural affiliation, including disputes. Folder 2/3 contains materials from the consultation visit with tribal representatives in 2002. Folder 3/3 contains materials from 2002-2005, including: further materials pertaining to disputes, including a U.S. Department of the Interior NAGPRA Review of several disputed remains/objects; papers relating to a second consultation visit in 2003; and requests for the Hopi Tribe to participate in DUMA's grant proposal in 2004.

Conditions Governing Access

A letter dated April 14, 1995 contained in this file, from Leigh Jenkins, the Director of the Cultural Preservation Office for the Hopi Tribe, states "We would like the requested moratorium on research activities to include the use of CD-ROM and the transfer of information by other technologu [such] as Internet. The Hopie Tribe additionally opposes any use of Hopi religious and ceremonial imagery for commercial and academic purposes. All future research requests on Hopi religion, ceremonies, and clan histories will be conducted only with the expressess written review and permission of the Hopi Tribe."

Conditions Governing Access

Hopi Tribal Council Resolution H-70-94 (included in this file) states: "archival records, including field notes, audio tapes, video tapes, photographs; which describe and depict esoteric ritual, ceremonial and religious knowledge, be placed under restriction by museums and other repositories for public access and hereby are declared to be the cultural property of the Hopi people."
