Papers against Herrnstein, 1971-1994
Abstract
Professor Gilbert's papers pertaining to his fight against the ideologies of Richard Herrnstein, whose work on human intelligence made arguments about intelligence and race that Professor Gilbert and many others considered racist. Included is: the September 1971 issue of the Atlantic, containing writings by Herrnstein on IQ; a pamphlet detailing accusations of racism against Herrnstein; a New York Times article discussing the backlash to Herrnstein's arguments; an article by Herrnstein entitled "Biology and Crime;" severa; articles pertaining to IQ and fertility/birth rates by Herrnstein; a letter inviting Professor Gilbert to speak on a panel following a lecture given by Herrnstein at DU; several articles by Professor Gilbert against Herrnstein; an article by Herrnstein and Drazen Prelec entitled "Melioration: A Theory of Distributed Choice;" a transcript of debate between Charles Murray (Herrnstein's co-author of "The Bell Curve") and Alvin Poussaint on "Larry King Live;" a review of "The Bell Curve" by Alan Ryan; an article by Charles Lane entitled "The Tainted Sources of 'the Bell Curve';" an article entitled "I.Q. and heredity: Suspicion of Fraud Beclouds Classic Experiment;" an outline for a piece of writing by Professor Gilbert (potentiall his blog or a lecture) entitled "Racism and the Failure to Consider Alternative Explanations"; and an article denouncing Herrnstein.
