Abstract

When 93-acre Lakeside Amusement Park was founded in 1908 in the town of Lakeside, west of Denver, the cost of grounds and construction was $800,000, including a 36-acre lake illuminated by 20,000 electric lights. Attractions included a miniature railway, casino, ball room, carousel, swimming pool, roller rink, boathouse, concerts, fireworks, movies, Ferris Wheel, penny arcade, etc. One of the original officers of the "White City" was Albert Lewin. Lakeside was prchased by concessionaire Benjamin Krasner in the mid-1930s. Krasner's sister lived on the property and had kosher meat delivered to her apartment. The park's 1912 wooden roller coaster, Cyclone, is famed as one of the greatest coasters in North America. Krasner sold a piece of his property to the developers of Lakeside Shopping Center. His daughter, Rhoda, became general manager of the amusement Park in 1969, and, unlike most amusement parks, it remains in family hands.
