Abstract

In 1946, Rabbi Herbert Friedman worked with the Allied Jewish Council and the United Jewish Appeal in a campaign to father relief funds for displaced Jews in central and eastern Europe. Friedman traveled to the region in July 1946, and found a mass exodus of Jews headed towards the U.S.-controlled portion of Germany to escape the horrible conditions in Poland. He used the stories of distress from his time in Poland in the Allied Jewish Council's campaign for relief funds. (See Lavender Hill Mob.)
