Biography
"Serving concurrently as director of Chamberlin Observatory, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and dean of the Graduate College throughout most of the 1890s, he added the duties of acting chancellor when Dr. [William Fraser] McDowell resigned in 1899." Herbert Howe served as acting chancellor from June 1899 to December 1899, when Henry Augustus Buchtel was appointed.

Fake posthumous diary written by Howe's spirit
Observation books contain astronomical observations made at the Chamberlin Observatory from 1897 through 1925, including Halley's Comet in 1910. Observation notes include Howe's notes as well as other astronomers. The reference material is ''A List of Stars for Observations of Latitude with Approximate Zenith Distances for Chamberlin Observatory,'' complied by Charles Joseph Ling.

Unidentified scrapbook page 2, has an image cut out from a magazine or newspaper, of 5 individuals with First Faculty, Denver University typed at the bottom, circa 1880. Three of the people are identified as Dean Hower, Chancellor David Hastings Moore, and Mrs. Moore.

Herbert A. Howe 1876 Diary, 1876
Diary for 1876, when he was a graduate student in astronomy at the University of Cincinnati, working with the 11-inch refractor at the Cincinnati Observatory, which had recently been moved to Mt. Lookout. The observations in the diary include his observations on the weather, his thoughts on religion, and working on the Luttle's comet. He also writes about the discovery of new stars that he observes and some social functions and gatherings he attended.

Professor Howe's diary for 1880 recounts his brief weather and astronomical observations, teaching activities at the University of Denver, participation in events in University Park and elsewhere in Denver, his family and religious life. Howe accepted an appointment to teach mathematics and astronomy at the University of Denver beginning in the fall. At the end of the book there is a monthly Cash Account where Professor Howe records some of his spending.
