Biography

Max Morris was born in Mobile, Alabama in 1867 to Moses Morris and Henrietta Lewyn Morris. He was the third oldest of nine (surviving) children. In approximately 1880, his family moved to Breckenridge, CO, where he attended public school. He spent several years in Leadville and Glenwood Springs prior to moving to Denver where he married his wife, Julia G. Emanuel by Rabbi Friedman of Temple Emanuel on January 10, 1892. Beginning at the turn of the century, Max dedicated his life to civil service and specifically the fair treatment of laborers. He served in the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth general assemblies of Colorado, beginning in 1903. Max served as the International Secretary-Treasurer of Retail Clerks International, fighting for the rights of laborers, fighting against child labor, and other labor causes. Sadly, Max died of a heart complication on June 6, 1909. He funeral was well attended and presided over by Rabbi Friedman.
