Box 80: Chester M. Alter Personal Book Collection, bulk: 1880-1955
This box contains several books belonging to Chester M. Alter on the study of chemistry, geology, and general science education. While several of the books are in decent condition, a book titled "Inorganic Quantitative Analysis" has damage to the spine.
Box 81: Chester M. Alter Personal Book Collection, 1886-1954
This box contains several books from Alter's personal collection on a variety of topics including chemistry, physics, and geology. The books are all in decent condition with no notable damage. This box also includes Alter's Masters thesis from Indiana University Bloomington (A Study of the Electrodeposition of Chromium, 1928) and PhD thesis from Harvard University (Investigations on Atomic Weights Nitrogen, Indium, and Radiogenic Lead, 1934).
Box 82: Metal Samples and Tools, 1928-1931
This box contains samples of NaCl, Chromium Plate, and Pure Silver along with two handling tools and two small vial of an unknown substance. Please note that the contents are very fragile and the Chromium Plate vial has sustained some damage.
Box 84: British Ceramists Goblet, May 8th, 1929
This box contains a glass goblet engraved with a seal surrounded by the words "British Ceramists" above and "Pittsburgh May 8, 1929" underneath. The seal appears to be a castle with three birds. The goblet is red with a blue stem.
Box 85: Microscope, 1940s
This box contains a microscope that belong to Alter in what we estimate to be approximately the 1940s or 1950s. This microscope was used by Alter during his time as a student.
Box 86: Genealogical Information, 1996
This box contains several years worth of genealogical information about the Alter family compiled in 1996 by Mary Louise Alter. Several individual family members and their spouses/ children have their own section including photographs, family trees, and newspaper articles. Please note that the Viola Alter folder contains three resumes all of which have social security numbers listed so this particular folder should not be available for public access.
