Rosenwald Family
Biography
The Rosenwald family were early Jewish pioneers who moved west via wagon train in the 1850s. Emanuel Rosenwald was born in Dietenhofon, Bavaria (now Germany) in 1838. On July 4, 1953, after seven weeks on board the Isaac Bell ship, he landed in New York. He spent a few weeks in Baltimore, and then went to work in a store in Staunton, Virginia. While studying English, he eventually made his way to Las Vegas with his brother Joe. He spent years traveling througout the American West selling goods, eventually settling back in Las Vegas with his wife, Elise Apfelbaum Rosenwald. Elise and Emanuel had four sons. Elise was born in Furth, Bavaria in 1852. The couple got married in New York in 1872. She died in 1913. Joe Rosenwald died in 1888. Emanuel Rosenwald died in 1915. His son Lucian married Emma, who had a son Robert. Robert wrote a short history of the family, a copy of which is in the collection.
