Oral history interview with Eugene L. Schmitz, November 13, 1984., 1984, 2005 August 12
Mr. Schmitz was born in Flagstaff, AZ on September 17, 1914. He recounts his experiences working on the Grand Canyon Railroad, and discusses loading and herding sheep, operating steam engines, snowstorms and changing train engines. He eventually went to work for Amtrak. Other topics discussed include: train accidents; the advantages of diesels and automation; working out of Grand Canyon; the meanings of engine numbers; the classes of engines; and various personal rememberances.

Born in Durango; recollections of his chilhood and youth; job experiences; came to Ciudad Juárez in 1953; worked as a bracero in Pecos and Ysleta, Texas; accident while on the job; stories told to him by his father concerning the Mexican Revolution and smallpox in Mexico.
