Abstract

Dr. Lewis Hill Chernoff was an accomplished violinist who played with the Denver Symphony and Carvallo's Symphony. He was also a chemist and worked for the Food and Drug Administration in Denver. Collection contains miscellaneous papers, diplomas and certificates largely relating to Lewis Chernoff and some to Sophie Chernoff.

Bibliography

Born in Russia in 1890, Lewis immigrated to the United States with his family when he was just one-year-old. The family lived in New Haven Connecticut and later moved to Denver where Lewis graduated from East Denver High School in 1907. Lewis returned to New Haven to attend Yale University graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1911 and received Ph.D. in chemistry in 1914. In 1912, he married Sophie Lovins, a 1090 graduate of East Denver High School. He was an associate professor at Yale before moving back to Denver where he worked for the Food and Drug Administration in Denver. He became a naturalized citizen in 1942. Sophie died in 1973 and Lewis in 1982.
